Welcome!
My name is Joshua Collver-Horvath, LCSW.
As a therapist, I enjoy helping individuals, couples and families as they navigate the challenges that inevitably come with life. Usually, when people get to the point of reaching out for therapy and support, personal issues have become unmanageable or so distressing that external help is needed. Reaching out to a therapist is a brave thing and you are taking an important step toward healthy change for yourself or for your family.
As a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), it is my job to help individuals and families achieve optimal health, safety, and wellness. You may be having a difficult time right now, but I am here to help you through it.
Your Sacramento therapist who Understands
I became a therapist because I felt a calling to help people with their own difficult life experiences. Alongside my training as an LCSW, I use my personal understanding of what life can throw at you, and how unanticipated trauma can set back a person's life, to help my clients.
I take an artistic approach to therapy. I want to help you align with your personal goals and values, and I stay flexible when treating each individual client, bringing together different approaches so I can offer you a healing experience that truly suits you.
I will support you as you engage in honest reflection and introspection, so you can develop better self-awareness. Honest reflection allows you to see all of you, and work on the patterns, thoughts, and behaviors you want to change.
“We can’t fix what we don’t understand and when people know more, they do better. This is what therapy is all about.”
— Joshua Collver

ACCEPTANCE and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) uses mindfulness techniques and self-compassion to help you develop psychological flexibility. ACT is used to treat depression, anxiety, and chronic pain, and it offers techniques that can help you make it through tough life challenges.
The focus of ACT isn’t symptom reduction. Instead, ACT helps you find answers to the question "What is contributing to this?” ACT helps you build a better relationship with your symptoms, your experiences, and the parts of your life that are outside of your control.
Cognitive Processing Therapy & TF-CBT
When we experience trauma, it can lead us to unhelpful and sometimes hurtful thoughts and feelings about ourselves.
Cognitive processing therapy, or CPT, is a type of therapy that helps adults with trauma untangle, and ultimately confront, thought patterns and beliefs about the self that have arisen from traumatic experiences. Trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT) is the counterpart therapeutic modality tailored specifically for children.
These are fast-working trauma-specific modalities that can offer a near-full reduction of trauma symptoms when a full course is completed.
DBT Skills Training
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a highly structured and highly supportive therapy approach that can help you manage the impact of overwhelming emotions and difficult, unhealthy thought and behavior patterns in your life. While I do not offer a full DBT program, I infuse many of DBT’s proven skills training into my work with clients.
With skills that help you regulate emotions, expand resilience when distressed, interact with other people more effectively, and stay present in the moment, DBT is a practical and compassionate approach to therapy that can be highly useful for people from many walks of life
Emotionally Focused (Couples/Family) Therapy
Emotionally focused therapy, or EFT, is an approach that encourages couples, or families, to lean into their feelings of love and attachment for each other.
In EFT, couples and families create more emotional openness, encouraging closeness so that recognition and return of affection can become a source of comfort for everyone involved. It is an approach that allows people to get to the root of their feelings of anger or resentment, and to reach toward each other, instead of turning away.
EFT has additionally been identified as the single most effective treatment for couples and families.

You matter.
I want to help you see your own ability to make meaningful changes in your life.
I have found that when people learn and understand more about themselves, the easier a time they have finding a way to live a meaning-driven life of purpose despite setbacks, pain, and disappointment. As your therapist, I will provide space in the therapy room for you to understand, accept, process, and move forward from your life experiences, so you can make changes to build a life that feels right for you.
Building trust with clients and helping them feel safe in therapy is one of my highest priorities. Each client is an individual to me; I put effort into remembering things you share in session that are unique to you, and I weave that knowledge into your treatment in a way that provides you with context and insight about yourself and your experiences.
